I am very thankful to the Impact Editorial Board for picking this topic. I will keep my comments short, as I am as anxious as you are to delve into the articles. One question that came to mind when thinking about this topic was: Are men as affected by this quandary as much as women? In my Google search, I found that the answer was yes, but it is not talked about as often.
My personal perspective obviously comes from the female point of view and all the intricacy this brings to the conversation. What I have learned in the 30 years of being a licensed physical therapist, mother of three, stepmother of two, grandmother of four, wife, friend, daughter, sister, volunteer, cook, confidant, and, oh yes, a small business owner, is that work–life balance has looked different at every stage of my life. My advice is to ask for help when you need it. Learn to say no to a few things or maybe a “not now, but ask me later” mentality. Don’t be so hard on yourself and try your best to enjoy the ride. Now that my kids are adults, they have told me how much they respected my work and the sacrifices I made to attend every event I could. They grew up in our business and have a strong work ethic and a passion to serve. I believe in my heart this is from watching their father and I balance our best between life, work, and service.
